PipeChina facility delivers 600 bcm natural gas

CHINA Oil and Gas Pipeline Network Corp. (PipeChina) said that the Horgos compressor station, the first station of the second and third pipelines of China’s west-to-east gas transmission project, has delivered a cumulative total of more than 600 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas, providing a guarantee for the stable supply of China’s domestic natural gas market and the low-carbon transformation of its energy structure.

The station is responsible for transporting natural gas from Central Asia and coal-based gas from Yili, Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region to central and eastern China. With an annual transmission capacity of 60 bcm, it ranks first in Asia in terms of installed capacity per station. Since it began operations in 2009, the station has operated for more than 6,000 days, with a single-day peak transmission volume of up to 163 million cubic meters. The compressor station has already put into operation a full-chain intelligent operation and maintenance system, integrating various smart equipment such as cloud-based laser methane detectors, machine vision artificial intelligence analysis and intelligent compressor diagnostic systems. It is capable of comprehensive situational awareness and integrated centralized control, achieving an upgrade from “manual inspections” to “smart management and control” in station operations. In addition, using waste heat from the gas-turbine-driven compressor units, the station has built the country’s first waste heat power generation project at a natural gas transmission station, achieving zero direct emissions from the station’s units, with an average annual power generation of more than 65 million kilowatt-hours.The 600 bcm of natural gas is equivalent to replacing more than 798 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 877 million tons. Through the pipeline system, this clean energy ensures the daily gas needs of more than 500 million people with the west-to-east gas transmission project, CCTV News reported.China vows to add 20,000 kilometers (km) of long-distance oil and gas pipelines by 2030. This will bring the country’s total pipeline network to 220,000 km.
