With Aidilfitri right around the corner, many Malaysians are already making their balik kampung travel plans. If you are worried about travel expenses, here’s some good news for you: discounts are on the way!

Yay for discounts!

The government has announced a special 50% toll discount for motorists traveling on highways in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. This discount will be available for Class 1 private vehicles (e.g. sedans, SUVs, and hatchbacks) on 28 and 29 March.

However, it does not apply to toll plazas at national border checkpoints, such as the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas. So, no discounts for folks travelling to and from Singapore!

Financial relief & cost

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Lingg said the initiative aligns with the MADANI government’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of the people and providing financial relief during festive seasons. The government will bear the financial cost of approximately RM19.69 million to compensate the highway concessionaires.

Motorists are encouraged to make use of the discount and plan their journeys wisely to avoid congestion. They are also advised to maintain sufficient balance in their eWallets or Touch ‘n Go cards. Additionally, motorists should check traffic conditions using live CCTV feeds provided by the Malaysian Highway Authority.

What do we think?

While Malaysians would likely prefer no tolls at all during festive seasons, a 50% discount is still better than nothing. If you are celebrating this news, take the minister’s advice to ensure your journey back home is safe and convenient for everyone involved. Have a good journey!
