Mount Kinabalu or gunung Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Borneo and Malaysia. It is located in Kinabalu Park, in Ranau district of Sabah and it is a prominent peak in Southeast Asia and a popular destination for climbers and nature enthusiasts. Mount Kinabalu stands at 4,095 meters (13435 feet) above sea level. If you have any plans to hike Mount Kinabalu soon, here are 10 tips for you!

But before you hike Mount Kinabalu, you need to make sure that you are fully prepared mentally and fitness.

  1. Physical Fitness: Train by hiking regularly to build stamina and leg strength. It includes aerobic conditioning, elevation training, and strength endurance training.
  2. Booking: Secure your climb permit and accommodation early, especially during peak season. It’s way better to book earlier so that you have more time to prepare and secure your preferred dates. You can visit sabahparks.org.my for more information.
  3. Packing Essentials: Bring warm layers, rain gear, sturdy hiking boots, headlamp, sufficient water, snacks and a first-aid kit.
  4. Pacing: Start slow, take breaks and listen to your body and most importantly follow your own pace.
  5. Hydration and Nutrition: Stay hydrated and eat regularly to maintain energy levels.
  6. Trecking poles: Consider using trekking poles to reduce strain on your knees and improve balance.
  7. Cash: Carry enough cash for park fees, guide tips and purchases at Laban Rata( Mountain Hut ).
  8. Respect the nature: Don’t throw any rubbish and avoid disturbing wildlife.
  9. Camera: Please bring if you have to capture the breathtaking views along your journey.
  10. Enjoy the Experience: Embrace the challenge and cherish every moment. Goodluck!

The best period to climb the mountain is during the drier months, from March to September. During this time, there is less chance of rain, making the trails less slippery and clear views. However, it’s important to note that due to climate change, weather patterns have become less predictable. It’s possible to have good climbing conditions outside of traditional dry season, and occasional rain showers can occur even during the drier months.
