KEMABONG: The Sabah Ministry of Rural Development (KPLB) will continue to intensify more proactive and productive efforts to eradicate poverty, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) direction.

Its Minister, Datuk Rubin Balang, said that initiatives to eradicate poverty, particularly in rural and coastal areas, are not only aimed at improving the people’s standard of living but also have the potential to stimulate the state’s economic growth so that it can be on par with other states.

“We will submit a proposal paper to the Cabinet later on regarding the direction and how we plan to move forward in developing our people in rural and coastal areas, so that not only can the people be freed from the cycle of poverty, but our economy can also improve,” he said.

He said this when met by the media at the District-Level Christmas and New Year 2026 Celebration for Kemabong, held at Dewan Sri Ontoros, Kemabong, on Saturday.

He added that, in addition to providing existing assistance, his ministry will also collaborate with other ministries to enhance the people’s economy, particularly in sectors such as agriculture and entrepreneurship.

Meanwhile, in conjunction with the first festive celebration following the 17th Sabah State Election, Rubin expressed hope that the people of the state, who come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and beliefs, would take the opportunity to strengthen bonds of friendship and harmony.

He said that despite differing political support during the recent state election, Christmas and New Year celebrations should serve as a platform to rebuild relationships, foster harmony, and strengthen unity within the community.

“I urge and call upon all citizens, especially those in the Kemabong constituency, to reconnect and reunite after the conclusion of the PRN17 elections, even though we may have different political ideologies,” he said.
