THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has received the complete police investigation report into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Sunday, urging the public not to politicise the tragedy.
“A recent death occurred, and immediately the Minister of Education was attacked. What has happened to our country? A death is not a trivial matter. If one happens, it is our shared responsibility to seek the truth — not to cast blame without basis,” he said.
Speaking at the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen’s Day celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Anwar added that he had personally contacted Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and the Home Minister to ensure a thorough and prompt investigation.
“The Inspector-General informed me that 60 individuals have already been called to give statements. Let us remember — this is a country governed by the rule of law, not one overrun by slander,” he stressed.
He made it clear that the law would apply to all without favouritism.
“Whether it involves a Tan Sri, a Datuk Seri, or a minister — if they are involved in murder or conspiracy, they will not be shielded. But let us not slander a minister’s child or the relative of a deputy prime minister or chief minister,” Anwar said.
The Prime Minister confirmed that the AGC received the full police report last Monday.
“I summoned the Attorney General and asked. He said, ‘Yes, we received the report on Monday’. I did not interfere — I merely enquired so that the public would know the true status,” he explained.
Anwar also appealed for national attention to shift from sensationalism to real socio-economic issues.
“Let us not be consumed only by headline-grabbing stories. We must not forget the fate of farmers and fishermen who still need our support,” he said.
In a separate development, Anwar announced that Malaysia had been selected to host peace talks between Thailand and Cambodia, thanks to its stable political climate and growing economy.
The talks are expected to bring Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thai Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit to Kuala Lumpur this week for detailed discussions.
“We are proud that, as a friendly nation, Malaysia has succeeded in reconciling two Asian neighbours. For the first time, we’ve managed to host a peace accord in Kuala Lumpur. Alhamdulillah,” he said.
On 28 July, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Anwar in his capacity as ASEAN Chairman. The agreement included plans to convene a General Border Committee meeting to support the truce.
Anwar also revealed that Malaysia’s diplomatic efforts had drawn praise from world leaders, including former US President Donald J. Trump.
“Various efforts were made. I contacted President Trump, President Xi Jinping of China — and in the end, both (Thailand and Cambodia) agreed. Imagine them putting their trust in us,” he said.
Domestically, Anwar reaffirmed that the unity government had delivered more infrastructure, financial support, and recognition of Sabah’s rights than previous federal administrations.
