Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held significant discussions with global technology leader Google on Thursday in Peru, focusing on advancing Malaysia’s data centre and artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2024, underscored the Malaysian government’s commitment to strengthening the AI and data ecosystem, ensuring it remains robust, secure, and in line with global standards.

Anwar’s conversation with Google’s head of delegation, Karan Bhatia, who serves as the company’s Global Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy, centered on the strategic importance of data security and regulatory frameworks. The prime minister emphasized that, while it is essential to promote AI and data centre development to support Malaysia’s technological ambitions, equally crucial is the establishment of a framework to protect data integrity and user privacy. Recognizing the risk of data exploitation and malicious breaches, Anwar reiterated the need for stringent measures that safeguard sensitive information against potential misuse.

In his statement following the meeting, Anwar noted, Appropriate attention needs to be given to fortifying the AI and data centre ecosystem, particularly in terms of implementing relevant rules and regulations to prevent data leakage and exploitation with malicious intent. He also mentioned that he had directed the relevant ministries to take swift action to counteract the potential risks associated with data and AI growth. This directive reflects his proactive approach to balancing innovation with security, ensuring that Malaysia remains competitive in the global digital economy while protecting its citizens and businesses from cyber threats.

The prime minister’s presence at the APEC Summit in Peru marks an active engagement in discussions on economic collaboration, digital innovation, and sustainable development within the Asia-Pacific region. Earlier in the day, he participated in a luncheon hosted by the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), where he interacted with leaders from across the APEC economies. The luncheon, organized by ABAC Malaysia Chairman Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam who also serves as Westports’ executive chairman provided a platform for Anwar to share Malaysia’s economic vision and discuss potential investment opportunities.

During the session with APEC business leaders, Anwar presented Malaysia’s aspirations concerning trade and investment, stressing the nation’s readiness to welcome investors. He outlined the steps his administration has taken to improve Malaysia’s business environment, including policies intended to enhance transparency and ensure efficient business facilitation. As Malaysia’s finance minister, Anwar highlighted the government’s Madani policies, which aim to foster a competitive and transparent business climate. These policies, he explained, are designed to streamline regulatory processes, attract foreign investment, and stimulate sustainable economic growth.

The discussions with Google and APEC leaders reflect Anwar’s broader vision for Malaysia a nation that embraces technological innovation and digital transformation while maintaining a vigilant approach to regulatory oversight. As AI and data continue to reshape global industries, Malaysia is positioning itself to be both a regional leader in digital technology and a responsible custodian of data privacy and security.

By engaging with top technology firms and fostering regional partnerships, Anwar is signaling Malaysia’s commitment to becoming a leading digital economy in Southeast Asia. The emphasis on robust regulations, secure digital infrastructure, and competitive business policies will serve to attract high-value investments, drive economic progress, and elevate Malaysia’s standing in the global digital landscape.
