Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vowed to take firm action against individuals who have looted the nation’s wealth, emphasizing that no one should be excused for corruption, regardless of their contributions to the country. Speaking at the "100 Years of Za'aba Seminar" at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Perak, Anwar made it clear that contributions to society do not justify acts of theft and corruption.
Anwar criticized those who believe their contributions to the country could excuse their misdeeds. He rhetorically questioned why village chiefs, community leaders, or even imams, who have all made significant contributions, are not allowed to steal from a mosque. He continued by challenging the logic behind allowing prominent figures to embezzle large sums, specifically targeting finance ministers who, despite their contributions, have allegedly stolen billions.
"Why should a finance minister think that just because they have contributed to the nation, they are entitled to steal billions of ringgit? It cannot be that way," said Anwar, without naming any specific individuals.
The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption, which he described as the “main cancer” afflicting Malaysia. He has consistently advocated for stringent measures to recover misappropriated funds and hold the culprits accountable. Anwar urged those who have stolen billions from the nation to return the money if they still saw themselves as “warriors.”
This renewed call for anti-corruption measures comes in the wake of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) reports that Malaysia loses approximately RM55 billion annually due to corrupt practices. Anwar’s administration has been keen on tackling this issue head-on, with the Prime Minister frequently highlighting the detrimental effects of corruption on the country’s economy and public trust.
In line with his stance, Anwar's government is expected to introduce more reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability within public institutions, reflecting his pledge to eradicate the culture of impunity surrounding corruption in Malaysia.
