PM Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia remains committed to the One-China Policy, a stance in place since Tun Abdul Razak’s era, despite criticism.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia remains committed to the One-China Policy despite receiving criticism regarding its stance, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the policy was not new, but had been practised by Malaysia since the era of the second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.
“The One-China Policy has been in place since the late Tun Abdul Razak. So I think the policy remains and we practise it and of course we seek a peaceful path.
“That is what I gave as an example, in America hundreds of years ago when there was the American War of Independence, they did not allow the division of any territories,” he said when met after opening the TikTok Shop Summit Malaysia, here today.
Anwar in a recent interview with Al Jazeera said he saw Taiwan as part of China. “It is one China. It is accepted by all.”
Commenting further, the Prime Minister said Malaysia respects China’s stance on the Taiwan issue but believes a peaceful solution is a step to deal with any dispute.
He said the One-China Policy practised by Malaysia is also in line with the agreement of the United Nations (UN).
“Of course we respect China’s stance but a peaceful path (is) the best. That is what is being done now but what policy does Malaysia recognise? One China is not new, it is agreed upon by the United Nations.
“That is why if you look at China, there is only one. The other entity is Taiwan. So it is not a new thing. It is just the way it is being pushed by Al-Jazeera, for example, that may cause a negative reaction,” he said.
