Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has defended the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) decision to withdraw its appeal against the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s acquittal of Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, insisting that the move was fully in line with legal procedure.
Anwar explained that the prosecution’s action followed a review by the Attorney General, who concluded that there was no strong basis to continue the appeal. He emphasised that the decision was not influenced by political considerations or personal affiliations. The Prime Minister noted that the case had been initiated in 2018, and that the High Court had already determined the charges—12 counts of money laundering totaling more than RM7 million and five charges of failing to declare income to the Inland Revenue Board—to be weak and unsubstantiated.
The Prime Minister clarified that withdrawing the appeal did not affect other ongoing investigations or legal proceedings involving Rosmah. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law, cautioning against allowing political biases to shape judicial outcomes. “The principle of the rule of law must be preserved. Decisions should not be influenced by political preferences or dissatisfaction with any individual or group,” he said.
AGC had formally withdrawn its appeal, as outlined in the Notice of Withdrawal of Appeal dated December 9. The notice indicated that after initially filing to appeal the High Court decision in December last year, the Public Prosecutor no longer intended to pursue the case, citing insufficient grounds to continue. The withdrawal effectively closed the appeal against all charges in the High Court’s verdict.
Anwar emphasised that the review and withdrawal were entirely procedural, noting that the original assessment of the case had been conducted under the previous administration. He underscored that the legal evaluation was based on the evidence presented and the court’s assessment of its strength.
The Prime Minister’s comments come amid ongoing scrutiny of the government’s approach to high-profile corruption cases. By clarifying the legal rationale, Anwar sought to reassure the public that the AGC’s decision adhered strictly to established judicial principles, and that the government remains committed to pursuing justice in other relevant cases
