The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, expressed concern over the persistent water supply issues at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) despite his previous allocation of RM3 million aimed at resolving the problem. He emphasized the need for clarification regarding the ongoing challenges faced by the university.

During the Finance Ministry’s monthly assembly, Anwar, who also serves as the finance minister, highlighted the distressing reports from social media indicating that UMS students were still grappling with water scarcity, prompting his call for immediate action. He urged relevant departments to furnish comprehensive reports on the matter, seeking insights into the delay in implementation despite the approved allocation.

Addressing the gravity of the situation, Anwar stressed the significance of swiftly addressing such issues, particularly when they directly impact students. He underscored the importance of resolving these problems without delay, expressing his concern for the students affected by the water shortage.

Anwar clarified that his intent was not punitive; rather, he sought a thorough report to understand the sequence of events following the approval of the funds and the subsequent measures taken by both the Ministry of Higher Education and the university to tackle the crisis.

Recent media coverage revealed UMS students expressing their grievances during a visit by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, holding placards stating, “Kami belum mandi (We have not showered).” Despite the deployment of state water department tankers, the available supply was insufficient to meet the needs of all residents on campus.

In response to the escalating situation, the Ministry of Higher Education announced an additional RM2 million allocation to UMS to further alleviate the water supply issue. This move came after Anwar's spontaneous allocation of RM3 million to the university for the same purpose in May of the preceding year.

Efforts to address the persistent water supply challenges at UMS continue to draw attention at the highest levels of government, reflecting the urgency and concern attached to resolving the issue for the welfare of the affected students.
