In a fiery response, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim criticized former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's recent racial remarks against the Indian community in Malaysia, deeming them "irresponsible" and "irrelevant." Anwar, who also holds the position of finance minister, expressed strong disapproval, asserting that such comments undermine the principles of unity and respect that should prevail in a diverse nation like Malaysia.

Anwar emphasized the importance of respecting all Malaysians, regardless of their ethnic background, and advocated for embracing the strength that comes from the nation's diversity. He categorically rejected Dr Mahathir's divisive statement, highlighting the irresponsibility of such comments, especially coming from a seasoned politician who had served as the country's prime minister for an extended period.

The Prime Minister addressed reporters after launching the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Programme For The People at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), where he seized the opportunity to express his strong objection to Dr Mahathir's recent remarks. Anwar denounced the former prime minister's tendency to make inflammatory statements, referencing previous instances where Dr Mahathir had made controversial comments about different ethnic groups.

Anwar went on to assert that every loyal citizen, regardless of their background, deserves respect, and he condemned any attempts to undermine the unity of Malaysians. He questioned the relevance of Dr Mahathir's statement and labelled it as an irresponsible act by a prominent figure who should prioritize fostering harmony among the diverse communities in the country.

Furthermore, Anwar accused Dr Mahathir of attempting to divert attention from pressing national issues. He identified the fight against corruption, digital governance, and energy transition as the real focus areas for the government. By framing Dr Mahathir's remarks as an intentional distraction, Anwar sought to refocus public attention on critical matters that require concerted efforts for the betterment of the nation.

Dr Mahathir's controversial comments were made during an interview with Indian-language TV channel Thanthi TV, where he alleged that the Indian and Chinese communities in Malaysia do not identify as Malaysians due to their loyalty to their "countries of origin." This assertion, which Dr Mahathir has been vocal about in recent months, reflects his advocacy for assimilating minorities into the Malay identity, promoting a monoethnic vision for Malaysia.

Anwar's strong rebuke of Dr Mahathir's remarks underscores the deep-seated tensions within the political landscape, especially regarding issues of race and identity. The Prime Minister's stance signals a commitment to upholding the principles of inclusivity and unity, countering divisive rhetoric that threatens the social fabric of Malaysia. As the nation grapples with these challenges, Anwar's response serves as a call for responsible leadership and a reminder of the importance of fostering a sense of belonging for all Malaysians.
