On December 26, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) filed documents with Bursa Malaysia, announcing that the new base electricity tariff for the fourth regulatory period (RP4) will be 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
Right now, the base tariff for the third regulatory period (RP3) is 39.45 sen per kilowatt-hour, which has been in place since 2014 and won’t change until June 30, 2025.
The new rate will apply from 2025 to 2027.
In response to the decision, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shared his thoughts, stating that the government won’t allow any electricity tariff hikes that could burden Malaysian citizens, as reported by Berita Harian.
“Regarding the announcement by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on the electricity hike, I have already contacted the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, the minister responsible, to ask TNB for clarification.”

Anwar expressed his disapproval, adding that any increase like that should only affect the wealthy or industries making huge profits.
“We won’t allow an electricity hike that impacts the public. Increases like this should only affect the rich or industries making huge profits,” he said.

According to TNB’s statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, the base electricity tariff in Peninsular Malaysia will go up by 14.2% to 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour (kWh), with a new tariff schedule starting on July 1, 2025.
But for the first 6 months of RP4 until June 2025, there won’t be any changes to the electricity tariff rate or structure.
Anwar Ibrahim then commented, saying that while the government understands the rising costs TNB has to deal with, these increases shouldn’t negatively affect the majority of the people.
