Anwar Ibrahim hints at major announcements on Aug 30, Sept 16 and during Budget 2027, with youth welfare and gig economy reforms in focus

KLANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to make several important announcements, including one on the eve of National Day on Aug 30 and another during the Malaysia Day celebrations on Sept 16.

However, he did not provide further details on the announcements.

“I will listen and seek other views and, (by) Aug 31, I will make one important announcement for the country. Then I will go to Kuching on Sept 16 for Malaysia Day.

“So, on the eve of Aug 31, there will be one announcement, (then) another on Sept 16 and another in early October (during the tabling of) the Budget,” he said at the Temu Anwar session held in conjunction with the opening ceremony of Himpunan Anak Muda Antarabangsa (HAMKA) 2026 here today.

He said this in response to a student’s question on the government’s efforts to safeguard the welfare and financial security of youths involved in the gig economy.

The Prime Minister said the government was strengthening protection for gig economy workers through the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) and the introduction of a new bill concerning small businesses.

He said that while there were views that the existing assistance was insufficient, the government remained committed to protecting the welfare of the group.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the government would facilitate access to financing for graduates seeking to venture into business, including through the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (TEKUN).

He said the existing requirement for applicants to have a business track record before obtaining financing should be reviewed in light of changing economic conditions and employment trends.

“So, all I can say here is that I will listen and look into the matter. If we have the capacity, we will do our best for the youth,” he said.
