PM congratulates South Korea’s new president Lee Jae-Myung

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his heartfelt congratulations to South Korea’s newly elected President, Lee Jae-myung, describing the outcome as a pivotal moment for the East Asian nation.

In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, Anwar praised South Korea’s enduring democratic values and the resilience of its people.

“I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations to President Lee Jae-myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea,” said Anwar. “This marks a turning point for South Korea, a nation that has endured a period of intense scrutiny and competition with remarkable fortitude and a steadfast commitment to democracy.”

He added, “The people have spoken in pursuit of reform—of trust, institutions and national goals.”

Anwar also conveyed Malaysia’s readiness to collaborate with President Lee’s administration to deepen bilateral relations.

“I look forward to working with President Lee in strengthening the friendship between our nations, especially in the areas of trade and technology, peace and security, and closer people-to-people ties.”

He highlighted that Malaysia–South Korea ties were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024, a development he called a “significant milestone reflecting our shared aspirations.”

The Prime Minister further urged for a greater role for ASEAN in Seoul’s regional policy, particularly as both countries prepare to lead major regional platforms this year.

“We hope ASEAN will play a more meaningful role in South Korea’s regional agenda. As Chairs of ASEAN and APEC respectively in 2025, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea are well-positioned to lead impactful regional initiatives.

“In an era of global instability, closer cooperation between Southeast Asia and South Korea is crucial for us all,” he added.

Anwar concluded by expressing his intention to meet President Lee at two major upcoming international events: the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October, and the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju.

“Malaysia wishes him wisdom and success in his leadership journey,” he said.
