PM conveys condolences, calls for thorough probe into student’s death

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his condolences over the death of secondary student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairoul Faisal, whose body was found with injuries at a school in Yong Peng, Johor yesterday.

He prayed that the Form Four student's family would be given strength and fortitude in facing the difficult ordeal.

Anwar also directed the authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation to determine the cause and establish what actually happened.

“If there are elements of a crime, firm action must be taken in accordance with the law,” he said in a Facebook post.

Anwar added that children's safety is a shared responsibility and that the government will not compromise on ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

In the 5.30pm incident yesterday, Irene, 16, was found dead with injuries on her body, believed to have been murdered in a secondary school hall in Yong Peng.

The victim was found by her grandmother and a friend who went to the school after she failed to return home despite her extra classes having ended.
