PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hailed Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) firm order for 30 new Boeing 737 aircraft, as a significant investment that reinforces the company’s commitment to growth and resilience.
The order consists of 18 Boeing 737-8s and 12 Boeing 737-10s, all powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, with the option to purchase an additional 30 aircraft to be delivered by 2030.
In his speech at the Document Exchange Ceremony for MAG's Narrowbody Aircraft Replacement Order, Anwar described the acquisition as a milestone that not only modernises the fleet but also strengthens Malaysia's standing in the global aviation sector.
“This milestone is not just about modernising the fleet but also fortifying Malaysia’s position as a key player in global aviation, and strengthening our economic foundation in an increasingly competitive world,” he remarked. “Aviation has always been a catalyst for economic progress, opening doors to trade, tourism, and new opportunities.”
Anwar added MAG’s investment was a clear signal of the company’s dedication to advancing both the aviation industry and the broader Malaysian economy.
“This investment signifies the company’s commitment to progress and the future of air travel for all Malaysians. The ripple effect will be felt across our economy, creating new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike,” he said.
The Prime Minister also reflected on Malaysia Airlines’ significant role over the years, noting that the national carrier has been more than just an airline. "For decades, Malaysia Airlines has been more than just an airline; it is a national icon, carrying Malaysia's flag to every corner of the world," he stated.
Anwar highlighted the broader social and national importance of MAG’s continued growth, emphasising that the new aircraft order is part of the effort to give Malaysians a national carrier they can be proud of.
"Equally significant, it is about giving every Malaysian a national carrier they can be proud of, one that upholds our Malaysia MADANI values of progress, fairness, and social harmony, while also championing sustainability and inclusivity," he said.
“These principles are the foundation of our commitment to a stronger, more resilient, and future-ready Malaysia.”
The event was witnessed by several prominent figures, including Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Khazanah Nasional managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, and Malaysia Aviation Group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail.
Earlier in the day, a symbolic document exchange took place between MAG, Boeing, and CFM International, marking the official beginning of the partnership for the new aircraft order.
With the addition of the 30 new Boeing 737 aircraft, MAG will gradually phase out its older Boeing 737-800 fleet currently operated by Malaysia Airlines. The group’s goal is to achieve a modernised narrowbody fleet of 55 Boeing 737-8s and 737-10s by 2030.
Currently, MAG operates a total of 113 aircraft across its fleet, which includes 42 Boeing 737-800s with Malaysia Airlines and five with its subsidiary, Firefly.
This major acquisition marks a key step for MAG as it prepares to meet the evolving demands of the aviation market and ensure the long-term sustainability of its fleet. – March 21, 2025
