Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake an official visit to Norway from May 18 to 19, during which he will hold talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and participate in the third Nordic-India Summit aimed at expanding cooperation in trade, green transition, technology and innovation.
The visit assumes significance as it will be the first by an Indian prime minister to Norway in more than four decades, the last such visit having taken place in 1983.
Announcing the visit, the Norwegian government described India as a key global partner amid growing geopolitical uncertainty and underscored New Delhi’s rising role in climate action, technology, trade and international security.
“India is the world’s largest democracy and the world’s most populous country. India plays a central role on climate, technology, trade and international security,” Støre said, adding that the visit highlighted the importance of cooperation between India, Norway and the Nordic region “in these times of global instability”.
During the visit, Modi and Støre will jointly interact with Indian and Norwegian industry leaders at the Norway-India Business and Research Summit, where discussions are expected to focus on trade, investment, clean energy, maritime cooperation and emerging technologies.
Modi is also scheduled to meet Norway’s King Harald V during the visit.
The Norwegian Prime Minister highlighted the growing economic partnership between India and the European Free Trade Association countries after the landmark free trade agreement signed in 2024 came into force last year.
Calling the agreement a “major breakthrough”, Støre said bilateral trade between Norway and India had more than doubled over the past decade and was expected to grow further with enhanced investment and economic cooperation.
The Nordic-India Summit will bring together leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway along with Prime Minister Modi.
The summit is expected to focus on strengthening collaboration in green transition, digitalisation, innovation and resilient economic partnerships, while also deepening political engagement between India and the Nordic countries.
