PM recalls nostalgic moment during S. Korea’s foreign minister’s visit

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s meeting with South Korea’s foreign minister Park Jin at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday was a stroll down memory lane.

In a series of tweets, Anwar recalled a chance meeting between both men 27 years ago.

In 1996, Park, who served as political secretary to then South Korean president Kim Young-sam, acted as translator for Anwar during his official visit to the country.

Anwar also recalled Park's rise to prominence in view of the meet.

“His Excellency Park Jin chanced a meeting with me on my official visit as the Malaysian deputy prime minister in Seoul some time in 1996.

“At the time, he (Park) was working as a political secretary and translator to former Korean president Kim Young-sam,” he wrote.

During the meeting, Anwar also said the duo discussed numerous issues of interests including cooperation in the economic, defence, infrastructure development, transport, renewable energy sectors as well as high-level visits between Malaysia and South Korea.

Anwar said they also exchanged views on international and geopolitical matters, adding that the Republic of Korea is an important partner to Malaysia. – The Vibes, May 3, 2023
