PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent official visit to Russia serves as a strategic move to bolster bilateral relations and explore new economic opportunities, particularly in the halal industry across Central Asia.
This visit underscores Malaysia's proactive approach in diversifying its international partnerships beyond traditional powers like the United States.
Dr. Norazlan Hadi Yaacob, Senior Lecturer at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), highlighted that the visit reflects Malaysia's diplomatic shift towards engaging with nations that share cultural and religious values, such as Russia, which has a significant Muslim population.
He emphasized that this approach is not ideologically driven but is rooted in pragmatic economic considerations, particularly in tapping into the multi-billion-dollar halal industry.
During the visit, Anwar met with Rushan Hazrat Abbyasov, Deputy Mufti and First Deputy Chairman of the Russia Muftis Council & Religious Board of Muslims, to discuss potential collaborations in Islamic banking, halal food production, and certification processes.
The discussions also included capacity-building initiatives and exchanges between institutions like the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Bank Negara Malaysia, and Russia's Islamic institutions.
This engagement aligns with Malaysia's broader strategy to position itself as a leader in the global halal economy, leveraging its expertise to facilitate Russia's entry into halal markets in the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia.
The halal sector's global growth presents significant opportunities for both nations to enhance trade and economic cooperation.
Concurrently, the 46th ASEAN Summit, held in Kuala Lumpur, serves as a platform for Malaysia to reinforce its commitment to ASEAN's centrality in regional and global affairs.
The summit's agenda includes addressing critical issues such as the civil war in Myanmar, maritime disputes in the South China Sea, and the impact of U.S. tariff hikes on Southeast Asian economies.
Anwar emphasised the importance of economic resilience through deeper ties with China, India, and the European Union, while ensuring that ASEAN remains united amidst global geopolitical tensions.
The anticipated Kuala Lumpur Declaration 2025, to be signed at the summit, is expected to outline ASEAN's vision for the future, focusing on inclusivity, sustainability, and collective economic growth.
This declaration aims to position ASEAN as a cohesive and influential bloc capable of addressing both regional and global challenges effectively.
