Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has once again refuted allegations of conflict of interest regarding private guests accompanying him on official overseas visits. Addressing these claims head-on, Anwar emphasized the government's transparency and fiscal responsibility, highlighting how his administration saved nearly RM1 million during recent trips aimed at boosting foreign investments.

Speaking today in response to accusations from a civil group, Anwar urged Malaysians not to be swayed by baseless claims suggesting unethical practices or quid pro quo arrangements with the private sector.

“I did not use private company funds. The government utilized Malaysia Airlines for visits to four countries at a total cost of RM1.6 million. This expenditure was fully covered by government funds,” Anwar clarified.

He further explained that additional seats on the flights were offered to private companies already planning to visit the same destinations to explore business and investment opportunities. These companies independently paid RM4.5 million to cover their travel expenses, ensuring no additional burden on taxpayers.

The prime minister underscored the financial prudence of this arrangement, contrasting it with the RM2.5 million the government would have spent had it opted to use its private jet for these visits.

“This approach saved the government money and demonstrated transparency. There is no conflict of interest. Do not fall for slander in this ‘zaman edan’,” Anwar remarked, using a Malay term that translates to “crazy era,” a phrase he previously used to criticize unfounded accusations and distorted narratives.

Anwar has been vocal about his commitment to transparency, even as critics question his methods. Over the weekend, he expressed disappointment that initiatives aimed at fostering international investment were met with skepticism. He lamented the irony of living in an age where "clean and transparent" actions are criticized, while wrongdoers are often celebrated.

He also defended the involvement of private entities in the trips, emphasizing that they included reputable Malaysian companies such as Proton, Petronas, Yinson, Sapura Energy, and major semiconductor firms. These organizations participated to explore strategic partnerships and investment opportunities abroad, aligning with Malaysia’s economic goals.

Anwar’s administration has prioritized attracting foreign investments as a cornerstone of its economic policy. By involving private sector players in official visits, the government aims to enhance its appeal to global investors while fostering collaborations that can drive growth.

Despite his explanations, Anwar has faced criticism from some quarters, who allege that inviting private guests on government-funded trips could create ethical dilemmas. However, the prime minister firmly dismissed these accusations, urging the public to focus on the broader benefits of his administration's efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s economy.

As the government continues its push for foreign investments, Anwar reiterated his stance on maintaining fiscal discipline and transparency. His rebuttal today serves as a clear message that baseless allegations will not distract his administration from its mission to bolster the nation's economic prospects.

By saving significant costs and promoting Malaysian businesses on the international stage, Anwar’s approach reflects a pragmatic strategy for economic development amidst challenges.
