Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that highway users nationwide will be able to enjoy an exemption on toll fees on 20 and 21 January 2023, in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.
“Good news! The Works and the Transport ministries have already discussed with the highway concessionaires to allow toll exemption on 20 and 21 January. This is to enable all Malaysians, not only the Chinese, but also the Malays and Indians who may want to return to their hometown for the holidays,” said the prime minister in a press conference.
Datuk Seri Anwar also highlighted that the exemption – which will see an allocation of RM40 million to benefit the travellers – is applicable to all classes of vehicles.
The Chinese community is set to celebrate Chinese New Year on 22 and 23 January 2023 (coming Sunday and Monday), but many are expected to begin travelling back to their hometown from as early as 20 January (Friday) to prepare for the occasion. If you’re one of those who will be travelling back this weekend as well, do take heed of the traffic rules as you drive!
Specifically, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has alerted the public of several traffic offences that will not be compoundable when they are on the road this Chinese New Year, and will land them straight in court. These include speeding, overtaking on double lines, and using phones while driving – among other things. Furthermore, the speed limit on federal and state roads will be temporarily reduced by 10 kilometres per hour (kph) during the Chinese New Year period.
