Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has challenged former leaders to surrender half of their wealth if they are truly sincere in helping the people.
In his speech during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Residensi Rakyat Programme (PRR) in Bestari Jaya today (Feb 15), Anwar said this was because some leaders have amassed wealth for their own benefit.
“I always remind the people not to be deceived by such leaders. These so-called ‘heroes’ (former leaders) who make noise are already rich, while their supporters remain poor.”
“When they were in power, they stole, took commissions, bought properties in Australia and London, and then returned home claiming to care for the country. When they declare their assets, their children’s wealth alone amounts to RM1 billion,” he added.
“If they genuinely want to help, they should give half of it to those in need. But they refuse to do so, yet still want to be seen as heroes.”
In the past, Anwar had challenged past leaders who had amassed wealth while in power to surrender half of what they had gained to the Malays if they were truly sincere in helping the community.

He said that some former leaders had made themselves and their relatives wealthy but had failed to help the Malays to this day.
Meanwhile, he has since kept his word is his choice of refusing to accept any salary as a show of solidarity with Malaysians.
