In today’s edition of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Daily Briefing by the Senior Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah shared that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PMX), believes that the anger and resentment caused by racially and religiously sensitive issues can be prevented if everyone learns to respect one another.

In the Daily Briefing shared via the PMO’s social media pages, Tunku Nashrul explained that this message from PMX comes after the incident involving an elderly Muslim man who slapped a non-Muslim man who was eating in public during Ramadan, as it goes against the spirit of harmony in our country as well as Islamic teachings.

“I will start today’s briefing with a message from the Yang Berhormat Prime Minister in regards to the incident where a non-Muslim young man was slapped for eating in public recently. Any such action or similar actions must be stopped simply because it goes against the spirit of national unity and harmony,”

“What is the point of talking about Islam and its beauty, especially during the month of Ramadan, if it does not build inner strength and keep us away from violent attitudes that threaten peace and harmony?”

A little mutual respect can go a long way

Tunku Nashrul then conveyed PMX’s belief that mutual respect can prevent interracial and interfaith conflicts.

“Yang Amat Berhormat PM also believes that issues that touch racial and religious sensitivities can be avoided if all parties adhere to and commit to practising the principle of mutual respect, to build a civilised country,” he added.
