MADANI Open House with PMX is planned to coincide with Aidilfitri 2023 celebrations to be held in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. Is that just a coincidence?
Anwar Ibrahim would not be holding Aidilfitri open house at his official residence Kompleks Seri Perdana in Putrajaya this Hari Raya, like all premiers before him have done in the past.
Instead MADANI open house, organised by JPM through the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (PACU) as the main coordinator, will be held in Kedah on April 29, Kelantan on May 12 and Terengganu on May 13.
"The programme will be implemented with the cooperation of the respective state government as host and assistance of a ministry appointed as the lead ministry."
"The prime minister will be attending the programme as the main guest to join people from all walks of life at the event. Menteri Besar or Chief Ministers will also be invited, apart from federal ministers," JPM said.
According to news reports, in Kedah, 25,000 people are expected to attend the reception while in the other two states only 15,000 visitors are anticipated.
Most observers are quick to conclude that this is Anwar's way of winning hearts and minds of the people from these three states. Why not?
This is as good a time as any to launch the forthcoming state elections campaigns and Anwar wants to do it in style. That is, by bringing the PM's annual Raya open house down to the grassroots at state level as a strategy to woo voters. Isn't it about time the PM meets the grassroots in their own neighbourhoods?
The programme in Kedah will be held at Hotel Raia, Alor Setar from 10 am to 2 pm, with the Home Ministry as the lead ministry.
"In Kelantan, the programme will be held at the Stadium Sultan Muhammad IV compound from 7 pm to 10.30 pm, with the Natural Resource, Environment and Climate Change Ministry as the lead ministry."
"In Terengganu, it will be staged at Dewan Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, UNISZA from 7 pm to 10.30 pm, with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry as the lead ministry," the statement said.
At the same time, JPM announced that the PM would attend open house events organised by state governments of Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan. All these receptions will be organised by the PM's department but it may likely help kill two birds with a single budget.
Observers say, it is a very smart move by PH government to go into the stronghold of opposition under the guise of PMX's open house to celebrate Aidilfitri that is hitherto unheard of in the history of this country.
This is a subtle way of promoting the caring ways of the PM and his MADANI government and softly sell what PH has to offer the voters in these states held by Perikatan Nasional.
Whether this strategy will ever translate positively into votes in coming state elections remain to be seen.
