The latest Akmal-DAP Youth drama is more than just a petty political quarrel—it’s a live demonstration of how brittle PMX’s Unity Government really is.
UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, never shy of a camera or a cause, has dared Penang DAP Youth to cut ties with him—warning that doing so is the same as cutting ties with UMNO Youth, and by extension, UMNO itself.
“Bring it on,” he declared on Facebook, as if the stability of the government were a schoolyard dare. https://newswav.com/A2508_BxvoLC?s=A_QkX7F5A&language=en
This whole spectacle began when Akmal led a protest outside a hardware store whose owner allegedly flew the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
Whether it was patriotic outrage or just political chest-thumping depends on which side of the Facebook comments section you live in.
But here’s the real problem: PMX’s Unity Government is an alliance built on the principle of don’t poke the bear—unless it’s politically convenient. Of course, now the bears are poking each other.
Where is the statesmanship? Where’s the grown-up in the room who can say: “Let’s deal with this like leaders, not like TikTok influencers chasing the next viral clip”?
Instead, what we have is a prime minister whose “leadership” so far consists of sitting quietly while his coalition partners take turns shaking the tree to see what falls out.
It’s less Unity Government, more “Who Wants to be the Next Coalition Breaker?”
The talent pool on the ground? Shallow enough to wade through without getting your ankles wet. Plenty of politicians with loud voices and quick tempers; very few with the skill to hold together a coalition of sworn enemies without making the whole thing look like a group project gone wrong.
If PMX doesn’t start showing actual leadership—real, decisive, unifying leadership—then his government won’t collapse from a grand conspiracy. It’ll collapse because it was never more than a patchwork of egos held together by duct tape, wishful thinking, and the hope that no one would notice the cracks.
