Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered a firm reminder to political leaders in Sabah, stressing that power must never be used as a gateway to personal enrichment or project-seeking. His message, delivered during the Harapan Urang Sabah Grand Finale in Kota Kinabalu, served as a clear warning as the state prepares to decide its next government.
Anwar underscored that any administration entrusted with governing Sabah should commit its authority to the advancement of the state and the nation—rather than exploiting its mandate for private benefit. He noted that power, whether held at the federal or state level, carries responsibilities that extend far beyond personal or familial interests, adding that leadership must be rooted in service to the rakyat.
He highlighted that Sabah needs a stable, competent, and united government to work effectively with Putrajaya. According to him, the strength of Pakatan Harapan and its cooperation with Sabah will play a central role in ensuring that development plans are implemented smoothly. He insisted that unity remains critical both for administrative stability and for efforts to uplift the socio-economic standing of the people.
Anwar cautioned that the misuse of influence—particularly through deals involving shares, contracts, or political patronage—runs counter to the principles of good governance. He stressed that public trust is eroded when leaders prioritise wealth accumulation over public service. His remarks pointed to a broader message: any form of governance driven by greed would only widen existing inequalities and delay progress for Sabahans.
Reflecting on his own responsibilities, Anwar pointed out that roles such as finance minister or prime minister are not meant to serve personal ambitions. Instead, he emphasised that these positions exist to safeguard national interests, improve living standards, and deliver meaningful reforms. He noted that leaders must demonstrate integrity, especially during a period when the rakyat expects transparency, accountability, and fairness from those in power.
The prime minister’s speech also echoed a growing sentiment among voters who are increasingly critical of political leaders perceived as prioritising self-interest. With the state election unfolding, his remarks appeared timed to reinforce a message against corruption and power abuse—issues that have long shaped Sabah’s political landscape.
Anwar concluded by urging all parties, including future leaders in Sabah, to treat this moment as an opportunity to restore public confidence and work toward long-term development goals. He signalled that this election is not only about securing political victories but about committing to a leadership ethos that places the people above all else.
