THE leadership of Perikatan Nasional convened a high-level meeting today amid mounting expectations that the coalition will formalise a new chairman and possibly determine a new Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

All four presidents of the coalition’s component parties arrived at the PAS headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut ahead of the Supreme Council meeting scheduled for 2pm.

Present were PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, Gerakan president Dominic Lau, Parti Rakyat India Malaysia president P Punithan and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who arrived last.

The meeting began with a session among the party presidents before the wider attendance of Supreme Council members at 3pm.

The gathering has drawn significant attention following reports that PAS is poised to assume the coalition’s top leadership role after Muhyiddin’s resignation as chairman.

On Friday, Abdul Hadi, who also serves as deputy chairman of Perikatan Nasional, was reported as saying that PAS would take over the helm of the coalition following Muhyiddin’s decision to step down.

Explaining the move to reporters, the Marang MP said PAS must act to preserve the coalition’s stability, stressing that governing the country requires cooperation among all parties.

Several senior PAS leaders were understood to have been at the headquarters since the morning, while GERAKAN deputy president Oh Tong Keong and secretary-general Wong Chia Zen were also seen arriving for the meeting.

The outcome of the deliberations is expected to shape the direction of the opposition bloc, particularly in Parliament, where the question of leadership succession remains under scrutiny. - February 22, 2026
