An opposition MP has raised concerns over what he calls “preferential treatment” for Chinese tourists, claiming they get through the country’s entry points with little hassle.

During the Dewan Rakyat session, Perikatan Nasional (PN) MP Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim pointed out that tourists from other countries are subjected to more questioning in comparison.

“Why are they being questioned more?”

Shahidan later questioned Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain on why tourists from countries other than China are being questioned more heavily.

“Tourists from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia are asked so many questions when entering the country, but Chinese tourists seem to pass through with ease,” he said.

Still, he took the opportunity to praise Shuhaily for his firm stance on tackling illegal immigration.

Shahidan later reminded Shuhaily that he, however, must be more gentle with law enforcement officers, noting that it might affect the morale of immigration officials.

“Congrats to Shuhaily. I know he’s firm and has the support of netizens, but he should be careful with his approach as it might affect Immigration’s morale,” he said.
