Perikatan Nasional (PN) has called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to swiftly open a full investigation into allegations that more than RM600,000 was channelled to Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who recently served as the senior political secretary to the prime minister. PN Chief Whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the issue demanded urgent attention, stressing that the probe must be carried out independently to avoid any perception of political interference.

According to Takiyuddin, the allegations—surfacing after claims made by a businessman—risk undermining the government’s declared commitment to combating bribery, power abuse and political funding misconduct. He warned that failure to take firm action could severely affect ongoing institutional reforms and the administration’s credibility on clean governance. He said that Parliamentarians from PN were treating the matter seriously, especially since the individual implicated had already been previously linked to a high-profile mineral mining controversy in Sabah.

PN urged all individuals connected to the claims to provide full cooperation to investigators. Takiyuddin emphasised that misconduct involving any party must be handled through due process without special treatment or protection, and that MACC’s role in safeguarding integrity required a clear and uncompromised response in cases of this nature.

The allegations centre around a businessman, known publicly as Albert Tei, who claimed he had transferred RM629,000 to Shamsul. Tei reportedly said he acted on the belief that the money could later be retrieved after being channelled to political activities involving Sabah. He is said to have prepared more than 300 pages of documentation, including payment receipts and message logs, to substantiate his claims.

Tei also claimed that part of the funds covered renovations, appliances and furniture for properties located in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur and for an official residence in Putrajaya. The claims have intensified scrutiny around Shamsul, who recently faced backlash over a support letter allegedly signed last year. The letter, which circulated widely online, had named contractors recommended for a hospital project in Muar. Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli later identified Shamsul as the author of the letter.

The issue prompted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, on November 18, to inform the Dewan Rakyat that he had reprimanded his senior aide. Anwar noted that government rules do not permit such endorsements and that the matter contradicted the principles guiding procurement and administrative conduct.

With growing pressure from the opposition and widening public attention, the spotlight now turns to the MACC as the agency prepares to examine the businessman’s claims and decide the next steps in the investigation.
