In a recent development, a member of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) political coalition has taken legal action against a fellow MP from Permatang Pauh, Fawwaz Jan. The complaint was made in the form of a police report over a now-deleted social media post wherein Fawwaz Jan expressed condemnation towards non-Muslims.
The MP who filed the report, Syerleena Abdul Rashid, represents the Bukit Bendera constituency. Syerleena Abdul Rashid emphasized that Fawwaz Jan's inflammatory statement has the potential to undermine the unity of the country, even though the post has already been removed. Syerleena accused Fawwaz of exploiting his social media accounts to incite hatred among his supporters for political gain.
The MP's statement on social media, according to Syerleena, has the capacity to disrupt public order and has the potential to instigate racial unrest. Syerleena outlined that Fawwaz's actions are not only morally wrong but also considered offences under Section 499, 505B, and 505C of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1988.
The controversial social media post in question involved Fawwaz Jan asserting that non-Muslims were actively working towards the downfall of Islam. Following the backlash, the Penang PAS Youth chief issued an apology for his statement.
Fawwaz also claimed that the post was created and uploaded by an administrator of his Facebook page without his knowledge. Syerleena Abdul Rashid pointed out that Fawwaz has a history of attempting to inflame racial and religious tensions, and expressed concern that this incident occurred during upcoming state elections.
She stressed that Fawwaz should refrain from seeking cheap publicity through the exploitation of racial and religious sentiments, especially when he lacks the ability to engage in economic debates and address broader policies that could benefit society. Syerleena Abdul Rashid concluded her statement by urging the police to take appropriate action in investigating Fawwaz Jan, considering the best interests of the country, its people, and religious harmony.
This incident underscores the importance of responsible social media use, especially for public figures, as their statements can have far-reaching consequences. It highlights the need for politicians to exercise caution, respect diverse beliefs, and refrain from making incendiary remarks that can stoke division and harm social cohesion.
