MANILA, Philippines — Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Monday said the hazing of several cadets inside the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) was by far the “worst” he had ever seen.
He said a mixture of concentrated sodium hydroxide (liquid sosa) and muriatic acid was poured on the back of the victims, resulting in third degree burns.
“If you look at the pictures they are really pitiful, their skin was burned all the way to their buttocks. This is unacceptable,” Remulla told reporters in a briefing at Camp Crame.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the victims were 21 underclassmen. Three suspects were arrested and were facing violations of the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 (RA 11053) but several more personalities are being investigated for their possible involvement in the hazing rites.
Naratez has ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit to conduct a full investigation of the incident.
“As an effect there will be a reshuffle within the PNP organization especially because a two-star and a one-star [generals] are also subject to the pre-charged investigation,” he said.
