POLICE discovered 468 kilogrammes of syabu (methamphetamine), estimated to be worth nearly RM15 million, inside an abandoned vehicle on the East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1), near the Kuantan toll exit.
The vehicle was left behind after the driver fled on foot, having earlier driven against traffic to avoid a police roadblock at the Gambang Rest and Service Area around 1pm last Tuesday.
Pahang Police Chief, Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, said the incident began when highway patrol officers were alerted to a four-wheel drive vehicle travelling against the flow of traffic on LPT1, heading from Kuantan towards Kuala Lumpur.
"Following the alert, police monitored the area and later found the four-wheel drive at Kilometre 211 of LPT1, near the Kuantan exit, approximately 18 kilometres from the roadblock location.
"Officers inspected the vehicle and found it locked, with no driver or passengers inside,” he said.
“Further inspection of the rear compartment revealed seven black plastic bags containing packages marked ‘chinese pin wei’, which were found to contain syabu.
“Police then broke the vehicle’s front window for a more thorough check and discovered 15 additional black plastic bags containing syabu,” he told reporters during a press conference today.
Yahaya added that the police have identified the registered owner of the vehicle and that investigations are ongoing.
He noted that authorities do not rule out the possibility that the meth was being transported by a drug courier hired to deliver the consignment to the Klang Valley.
Police are urging members of the public with any information to come forward, particularly those who may have dashboard camera footage of the four-wheel drive travelling against traffic on LPT1 on the day of the incident.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. – April 17, 2025
