KOTA BHARU, Aug 19 — Malaysian motorcyclists and motorists entering Thailand are advised to comply with local laws there to avoid enforcement action.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said road users should first familiarise themselves with the regulations in Thailand, as there are differences in laws between the two countries.
“The same applies when Thai nationals enter Malaysia. They must obey our laws,” he told a press conference at the Kelantan Contingent Police Headquarters today.
“For example, motorcycle modifications may be permitted in Malaysia but may not be allowed in Thailand. That is why we need to understand the laws there before entering the country,” he said.
He also advised vehicle users to consider other requirements, such as insurance coverage, as such measures are important to prevent Malaysian travellers from being detained or fined while in the neighbouring country.
Earlier, the media reported that a group of 17 Malaysian motorcyclists travelling to Hat Yai, Thailand were issued 15 summonses by Thai authorities, amounting to 15,000 baht (about RM1,850), for various traffic offences, including the use of flashing lights, loud exhaust systems and other violations. — Bernama
