DUNGUN: Police arrested an 18-year-old woman suspected of being involved in the theft of a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) cable in Kampung Delong, Jalan Loji Air Paya Kemudi, here, early this morning.
Dungun district police chief Supt Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said the teenager was arrested at 3 am today after police received a report about the loss of a 150-millimetre (mm) TNB cable, approximately 1,000 metres long and estimated to be worth RM8,000.
He said that acting on the report, a team of officers from the Dungun district police headquarters (IPD) rushed to the location, where the suspect fled after noticing the police presence, leaving behind the cable, which had been cut into shorter pieces.
Following police action, a woman was arrested while in a grey Proton Satria Neo.
“In addition, the police also seized a vehicle, several sections of TNB cable and rods, a cable cutter, and a bag containing tools believed to be related to the case,” he said in a media statement today.
Nik Ab Halim said the initial investigation found that the cables were believed to have been cut using cutting tools before the insulation was removed to obtain the copper wire.
He said the detained woman was brought to the Dungun Court today and remanded for four days until Sept 27 to assist in the investigation.
“The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft,” he said.
He added that police would intensify preventive measures and enforcement against cable theft and utility facilities, which harm companies and undermine community well-being.
