Police arrest four in schoolgirl bullying and extortion case

BEAUFORT, July 14 - Police have detained four individuals to assist in the investigation into a bullying and criminal intimidation case involving a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Membakut here recently.

The Beaufort District Police Headquarters (IPD) said in a statement yesterday that it received a report from the victim, who alleged that she had been repeatedly threatened and extorted by a group of individuals.

“Acting on the information, the Beaufort IPD Criminal Investigation Department launched an intelligence operation and successfully arrested all four suspects in the district,” the statement said.

The case is being investigated under Section 507B of the Penal Code for harassment or bullying that causes fear and distress, as well as Section 506 of the same code for criminal intimidation.

The Beaufort IPD said investigations are ongoing to complete the investigation papers before the case is referred to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) for further instructions and legal action.

It added that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) reminds the public, particularly schools and parents, to remain vigilant about student safety and to promptly report any incidents involving bullying or extortion.

“The public is also advised not to circulate unverified information or speculate on social media, so as not to disrupt the ongoing investigation and legal process,” it said.
