Police arrest teen who faked own kidnapping

PETALING JAYA: A 19-year-old who faked her kidnapping and demanded a ransom of RM100,000 for her “release” was arrested last night.

The teenager had followed her family to a shopping mall in Ampang before telling them she wanted to use the washroom, only to go “missing” for two hours, Harian Metro reported.

Her family then received a text message demanding RM100,000 for her release.

“Fearing for her safety, the father lodged a police report,” the daily quoted a source as saying.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the girl has been remanded for two days from today and will be investigated for extortion and giving false information.

It is learnt that the teenager had faked her kidnapping as she wanted to escape her sheltered lifestyle.
