Police await autopsy to confirm number of wounds in fatal school stabbing

POLICE are yet to confirm the exact number of stab wounds sustained by 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen, who was fatally attacked at a secondary school in Bandar Utama, as they await the official autopsy report.

The case has drawn national attention after Yap’s mother, Wong Lee Ping, told reporters that a hospital pathologist had privately informed her family that the teenager had suffered more than 200 stab wounds.

The injuries were said to be concentrated on the right side of her body, from the neck down to her thigh.

Petaling Jaya district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat, told Sin Chew Daily that investigations are ongoing, but police have not yet received the final post-mortem findings.

“As of today, the police have not received the autopsy report from the hospital,” he was quoted as saying, while confirming only that there were “multiple stab wounds.”

Shamsudin also clarified that a psychiatric assessment for the 14-year-old male suspect will be conducted only after he is formally charged, and subject to a court order.

The suspect, a fellow student at the same school, was arrested shortly after the incident, which occurred on the morning of 14 October in the girls’ lavatory. He has been remanded for seven days as part of the murder investigation.

Yap’s wake is currently being held at the Nirvana Center in Kuala Lumpur and will continue until Sunday evening.

The funeral cortège is scheduled to depart on Monday morning for the Nirvana Crematorium in Shah Alam, where the final rites will be performed. - October 17, 2025
