Police await MCMC digital forensic report to complete probe into insulting images of Selangor Sultan shared on Facebook.

GEORGE TOWN: Police are awaiting a digital forensic analysis report from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as part of investigations into the posting of insulting images of the Sultan of Selangor through a Facebook account under the name “Lucas Liam”.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said materials related to the case, including the suspect’s mobile phone, had already been submitted to MCMC for forensic examination.

“The analysis may take some time because once the case materials are submitted, MCMC needs to conduct its own examination.

“The investigation paper has already been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), but we were asked to wait for the MCMC report first. Once the report is obtained, the investigation paper will be resubmitted to the AGC for further action,” he said.

He told reporters this after officiating the Community Crime Prevention Carnival and launching of the Penang Contingent Taman Angkat AMANITA at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here, today.

Also present were Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail and Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

Ayob Khan said the suspect, a man in his 30s who was remanded for four days after being arrested on May 3, has since been released on police bail.

He stressed that the prosecution would only proceed once investigations are fully completed.

“It is not that we arrest someone today and charge the person tomorrow. The data from the mobile phone must be analysed by MCMC to ensure that when charges are filed, the investigation is complete and the case is solid,” he said.

The suspect was arrested at about 7.10 pm on May 3 in Bukit Mertajam by a team from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) in collaboration with the Penang police contingent headquarters.

Previously, police confirmed receiving 307 reports related to the spread of content deemed insulting towards the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on social media.
