Police arrest three suspects, including a woman, in Bukit Mertajam drug raids that uncovered heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis and smoke grenades

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police arrested three individuals, including a woman, suspected of being involved in a drug trafficking syndicate in two separate raids around Bukit Mertajam yesterday.

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah said that in the first raid, conducted on a house in Taman Gemilang Indah at 6.40 pm, police arrested a man and a woman, both aged 47.

“An inspection of the premises led to the seizure of drugs believed to be heroin, methamphetamine and cannabis, as well as several pieces of equipment believed to be used for drug packaging and distribution activities.

“Police also found two smoke grenades kept in a steel box in the kitchen cabinet,” he said in a statement today.

Acting on further information received, the police conducted a follow-up raid and arrested a 46-year-old man believed to be linked to the illegal activities.

He said the male suspect arrested in the first raid has one prior drug-related record, and also tested positive for drugs.

The other two suspects had no previous crime or drug-related records, and also tested negative for drugs.

He said that police also seized three cars, five motorcycles, three gold rings and RM5,700 in cash, with the total seizure estimated at RM303,400 from the two raids.

Nik Aminuddin said the three suspects were taken to the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court and ordered to be remanded for seven days until Aug 6 to assist in investigations, adding that the case is being investigated under sections 39B, 6 and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, together with Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

He credited the success to the intelligence gathering and integrated action of the Seberang Perai Tengah Police Headquarters Narcotics Crime Investigation Division.
