POLICE have confirmed that a viral video showing a student being bullied by his peers took place at a Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) in the Seberang Perai Selatan district last year.
Deputy Chief of Seberang Perai Selatan District Police, DSP Mohd Norazmi Abd Ghapar, told Bernama that the incident occurred in the middle of last year. He added that an initial investigation had been conducted, and the police have now identified seven students involved, including the victim.
“The incident, as shown in the viral video, happened in the middle of last year. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident,” he explained. “However, it is believed that the bullying resulted from teasing between the students. So far, no police report was filed until the video resurfaced today.”
Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Chairman of the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), issued a statement through social media platform X, directing a thorough investigation into the incident and promising strict action against those responsible if the bullying is confirmed.
“This morning, I received a message circulating on social media regarding an alleged bullying incident at an MRSM. I have directed MARA’s management and the Secondary Education Division to conduct an immediate investigation,” Asyraf Wajdi said.
“Upon investigation, it has been confirmed that the bullying incident took place at an MRSM in the northern region of the country,” he added. “I have instructed that a detailed investigation be conducted, and during this process, the involved students should be suspended to prevent interference with the investigation. This will send a clear message that we will not tolerate such behaviour.”
Asyraf Wajdi stressed that MARA would never tolerate any form of bullying, whether physical or mental, in its educational institutions. He also reminded all students about MARA’s principle: "You Touch, You Go."
“MARA is a platform for nurturing leaders. How can we develop leaders who lack wisdom, whose conduct and character are tainted by such behaviour?” he said.
The viral video, which lasts one minute and 32 seconds, shows a group of male students pinning another student down on a bed, hitting him with a belt across his backside. April 7, 2025
