Police apprehended a 27-year-old man yesterday, suspected of being a mule account holder for an online investment fraud syndicate that caused losses amounting to RM32,000.
Barat Daya district police chief Supt Kamarul Rizal Jenal stated that investigations revealed the man’s involvement in a syndicate operating non-existent online investments, which was connected to a recent case in Queensbay. "The victim made online transactions totaling RM32,300 to the suspect's bank account but subsequently lodged a police report upon realizing they had been scammed," he explained to Bernama today.
The man has been placed under remand to aid in the investigation, which is being conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
In a separate development, Kamarul Rizal reported the arrest of four local men, aged between 25 and 33, on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in an unarmed robbery in Bayan Baru last week. The suspects were apprehended during a raid at a house in Lorong Sungai Ara 2 and are currently being held to assist in the investigation, classified under Section 395 of the Penal Code.
During the raid, police seized several items believed to have been used in the robbery, including a motorcycle, helmets, clothing, motorcycle keys, and RM65 in cash. These items are expected to play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation.
These arrests highlight the police's continued efforts to combat various forms of crime in the region. The crackdown on the online investment fraud syndicate and the unarmed robbery case underscores the importance of vigilance and timely reporting by the public. Authorities are urging citizens to remain cautious and report any suspicious activities, especially those involving financial transactions online.
As investigations continue, the police reiterate their commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice and preventing such incidents from occurring in the future. The community is encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safer environment for all residents.
