Police fire shots to stop multiple repeat offender after ramming patrol vehicle

POLICE in Tanah Merah have arrested a man with an extensive criminal record after he repeatedly rammed a police vehicle with a four-wheel drive in a violent attempt to evade capture.

The incident, which unfolded at about 5.57pm along Jalan Masjid Tok Che Dol in the Tepi Sawah area, forced officers to discharge firearms in order to stop the suspect.

District police chief Mohd Haki Hasbullah said the incident began when a team from the Criminal Investigation Department at the district police headquarters detected a suspicious vehicle and attempted to intercept it.

“Police gave chase until the paddy field area, where the suspect suddenly stopped and acted aggressively by reversing at high speed, crashing into the front of the police vehicle.

“Despite being ordered to exit, the suspect refused to cooperate and continued attempting to hit officers by reversing the vehicle multiple times,” he said in a statement.

He added that officers, acting in self-defence, ordered shots to be fired at the vehicle’s tyres.

“The first shot struck the right rear tyre, followed by a second shot hitting the left rear tyre after the suspect refused to stop,” he said.

The man was eventually subdued and arrested without injury, and the vehicle was seized.

Police checks revealed the suspect has 13 prior criminal records. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. - April 30, 2026
