Police thwarted an attempt by two suspects to smuggle 4.072 kilograms of Syabu from Tawau to Sarawak when the General Operations Force conducted a routine car inspection at the Sapi Nangoh Road Check Point (RCP) on Friday, June 14.

Beluran district police chief, Superintendent Hasan Majid, reported that during the 11 a.m. incident, one of the suspects, aged 43, was detained at the Sapi Nangoh RCP. Meanwhile, the driver of the Proton Saga, with registration number SYR7763, managed to escape by speeding away during the inspection.

The police have identified the suspect who fled the scene as Justin Vau Langat, 27, who has a prior criminal record in Negeri Sembilan for drug-related offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. His last known address is Long Nahan Baram, Sarawak.

“Initial investigations revealed that the suspects travelled to Tawau to collect the Syabu and were en route back to Sarawak where they intended to distribute or sell the drugs in the local market,” Hasan told reporters.

During the inspection, police had stopped the Proton Saga, and one suspect accompanied the officers to open the car's trunk, where a black plastic bag was discovered. At that moment, the driver suddenly accelerated and sped off towards Jalan Telupid-Ranau. Upon examining the contents of the black plastic bag, officers found four red packets labelled as Chinese tea. Each packet contained Syabu with an estimated street value of RM130,304.

Hasan added that the detained suspect, who tested positive for drugs and has two prior drug-related records, will be remanded for seven days and investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Superintendent Hasan urged anyone with information about the whereabouts of Justin Vau Langat or any other related details to contact the Investigation Officer, Inspector Mohd Solahuddin Mohamad, at 019-9810144 or reach out to the Beluran district police headquarters at 089-5111222. — Bernama
