KUCHING, July 6 — Police are investigating an incident involving a man who allegedly assaulted a woman in front of a rental room at Metrocity Matang here last Friday.

Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that a report on the incident, which was said to have occurred at around 8pm, was received the following day.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the incident is believed to have stemmed from a dispute between the victim (woman) and the male suspect.

“The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, if convicted,” he said in a statement.

He urged the public not to speculate or spread information that could affect police investigations.

Police appealed for anyone with information related to the incident to come forward to assist by contacting the Kuching District Police Headquarters or the investigating officer Sgt Mancha, at 019-5958260.

A video of the altercation has since gone viral on social media, showing the man assaulting the woman in front of the rental room. — The Borneo Post
