POLICE in Johor have launched a manhunt for three men suspected of hacking a man to death with machetes in an attack in Bukit Kangkar, Sungai Mati, in the district of Tangkak.

The suspects are believed to have fled the scene in a white saloon car shortly after the assault, which occurred on Saturday evening.

Tangkak district police chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident took place at about 7.40pm.

According to initial findings, the 38-year-old victim was chased by three men near a food outlet before attempting to escape to a nearby house in Batu 9, Bukit Kangkar.

“The victim is believed to have been attacked by three men armed with machetes and seriously injured before the suspects fled in a car,” he said.

Police have since launched an extensive operation to locate and arrest the suspects, while the motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

Roslan said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

He urged members of the public to refrain from speculation that could interfere with the investigation.

“Following the incident, police are actively conducting efforts to track down and arrest the suspects.

“Motif for the incident is still under investigation,” he said.

Members of the public with information have been asked to contact the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent Sharidathul Alfaha, at 019-2699573, the Tangkak district police headquarters at 06-9781222, or the nearest police station.

“Public cooperation is greatly appreciated to help police resolve this case as quickly as possible,” Roslan added.

The victim, identified as Tong Wei Sheng, was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital after suffering severe injuries to his arms, legs and back.

Investigators believe the victim had earlier travelled to the location with a friend to meet individuals linked to the group involved in the attack, when several vehicles carrying the suspects arrived.

Closed-circuit television footage from the area shows the victim being chased by three men wielding machetes. The suspects were seen concealing their identities by covering their faces with hooded clothing and masks during the attack. - March 15, 2026
