What should have been a routine call about trespassing turned into a major animal cruelty investigation in Murrieta, California.
On the evening of Friday 1st May, Murrieta Police Department (MPD) received reports of an abandoned U-Haul rental truck on private property, with two dogs locked in the front cab. But when officers arrived at the scene around 6:30pm, they soon heard other suspicious noises.
Multiple barks and whimpers were coming from the closed cargo area of the 15-foot truck. When officers opened the sliding rear door, they discovered the unthinkable: 21 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, including several pregnant females, were crammed together in the dark.
The investigation revealed that the animals had been locked inside for several hours. The cargo area had no ventilation or air conditioning. The neglected dogs had severely matted coats and barely any access to food or water.
The suspect returns to the scene... with 12 more dogs
As police officers and animal control officers worked to get the dogs out of the truck, there was a sudden twist. The main suspect in the case returned to the property driving an SUV.
Inside the vehicle, officers discovered 12 more dogs, bringing the sad total to 33 seized canines. The individual was arrested immediately at the scene for animal cruelty, abandonment, and leaving animals unattended in a vehicle. A few weeks later, on 27th May, the Riverside County District Attorney officially charged him with 21 felony counts of animal cruelty, along with two misdemeanours.
A long rehabilitation for the 33 survivors
Fortunately, the 33 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were saved in time. They were taken to the Animal Friends of the Valleys shelter in Lake Elsinore to receive emergency veterinary care and begin their rehabilitation.
On Monday 15th June, the shelter shared reassuring news on social media, stating that all the dogs were doing well and were finally receiving the love and attention they deserve. Due to the ongoing legal investigation, the organisation could not provide further details about their future, but promised to share updates as soon as possible.
