A POLICE inspector who was previously released without charge is facing a retrial at the Magistrate’s Court here today for allegedly failing to apprehend a suspect involved in a firearms offence.

The accused, 46-year-old Azlan Sudin, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim.

According to the charge, Azlan, as a public officer with a legal duty, allegedly intentionally failed to arrest a 36-year-old man suspected of committing an offence under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960. The incident is said to have occurred in the lobby of the Bukit Jalil Police Station between 6.50pm and 7pm on 21 February 2025.

The prosecution framed the charge under Section 221(c) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Iman Nurhidayah Ezani informed the court that the prosecution had received instructions from the Senior Deputy Public Prosecutor to proceed with the case and offered bail at RM8,000 with one surety.

Azlan’s counsel, Anasuha Atiqah Mat Saidi, requested that bail be maintained at RM3,000 with one surety, as previously set.

She noted that yesterday was intended to be the first day of trial, but the case was adjourned after the prosecution reported no witnesses were present, despite the hearing having been scheduled since November last year.

“Given the urgency for my client to be recharged today, we assumed the witnesses could now attend and requested the court to set the trial date in the near future,” she said, assisted by lawyer Maisarah Norkefli.

Anasuha added that Azlan, who has been suspended since July last year, has served in the police force for 25 years and supports his wife and three school-aged children.

She described the delay in commencing the trial as unreasonable.

The court subsequently granted bail of RM3,000 with one surety and fixed 10 April for the submission of documents and case mention. - February 20, 2026
