Police investigate Johor flag displayed upside down at mini-market

POLICE have launched an investigation into the display of the Johor state flag in an inverted position at a mini-market in Pekan Nanas, Pontian after images of the incident circulated widely on social media.

Pontian District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib, confirmed that the incident sparked public discontent, prompting a formal inquiry.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the flag was mounted incorrectly due to carelessness on the part of those responsible, with no intention to insult or show disrespect towards the Johor state emblem,” he said in a statement.

“The premises owner cooperated fully with the authorities and promptly rectified the error,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, the Emblems and Names (Control of Display) Act 1949, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

Superintendent Mohammad Shofee also urged the public to refrain from speculation or spreading false information, warning that such actions could stir racial tension and disrupt public order.

He stressed the importance of adhering to proper protocol when displaying the national flag or state banners, especially during Merdeka month.

“The public is advised to remain vigilant and ensure flags are displayed correctly as a sign of respect for the nation and the state. Police will continue to monitor compliance and will not compromise with any party that disrespects national or state symbols,” he said. - August 26, 2025
