It was recently reported that a couple from China had found a hidden camera in their hotel room during their trip to Kota Kinabalu.
The woman shared the experience through her Xiaohongshu account, stating that they had booked their hotel room in the state via Airbnb. After checking into their room, the couple inspected the room for possible hidden cameras when the husband found something suspicious about the power outlet.
“There seemed to be a shiny/reflective surface. We took out the power socket panel and we were shocked to discover a hidden camera between the two USB ports,” the foreign woman wrote in her post.
Following that, they decided to file a police report where police have since confirmed receiving a report relating to a spy camera installed inside a wall socket at a homestay.
According to City Police Chief ACP Mohd Zaidi Abdullah, the report was lodged by a Chinese tourist at 5:27 pm on September 7. He said an investigation paper had been opened under Section 509 of the Penal Code.
“Preliminary investigations have been carried out, including seizure of case items, and efforts to identify the perpetrator(s) are underway,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zaidi also refuted claims that the complainants were ordered to take down their posts on social media lamenting the incident.
However, according to the post, the woman claimed that they had deleted the post originally after the police had allegedly told them to delete it. But, upon their return to China, the woman decided to repost the matter again.
“Anyone with information regarding the case may channel it to Kota Kinabalu Criminal Investigation Department Chief DSP Khairul Shah Peri at 011-2669 1994,” he said.
