Police may send team to Pakistan over detention of 130 Malaysians in scam raid

POLICE may send officers to Pakistan to establish the circumstances surrounding the detention of 130 Malaysians in a raid on a suspected cyber scam operation in Rawalpindi.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) was working with Pakistani authorities through the Foreign Ministry to obtain the identities and background of those detained.

He said some of the Malaysians reportedly had valid visas, while others had overstayed.

"We are still awaiting further details and may send officers there to obtain comprehensive information," he said after the Jasamu Dikenang dinner organised by the Malaysian Ex-Police Association at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur last night.

Mohd Khalid said the matter had been referred to the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director for follow-up action.

He added that PDRM had yet to receive a complete list of the detainees, although Pakistani authorities had confirmed they were Malaysian passport holders.

The arrests followed a raid by Pakistan's National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on a call centre at KASA Tower, Bahria Town Phase VIII, Rawalpindi, suspected of targeting Malaysians through impersonation scams.

Pakistani news portal ProPakistani reported that the syndicate allegedly used VoIP calls to pose as bank customer service representatives, informing victims of supposedly suspicious transactions before transferring them to individuals impersonating Malaysian police officers.

Some suspects allegedly wore police uniforms and used backdrops resembling police offices during video calls to lend credibility to their claims.

Victims were then threatened with alleged money laundering or other criminal offences and pressured into transferring money.

The proceeds were believed to have been channelled through Touch 'n Go eWallet before being converted into cryptocurrency.

The operation was reportedly run by a Malaysian based in Cambodia, with supervisors and call centre managers operating in Pakistan.

The extent of the operation, the individual roles of those detained, the number of victims and the total losses remain unclear - October 31, 2026
